What is a ceiling cassette air-conditioning unit?

A ceiling cassette is an indoor air-conditioning unit recessed into a suspended or purpose-built ceiling. The main casing sits above the ceiling and a decorative panel remains visible below. Depending on the model, conditioned air is discharged in four directions or around most of the panel, helping distribute cooling or heating across a wider floor area than a typical wall unit.

The cassette connects by refrigerant pipework, controls and condensate drainage to an outdoor heat-pump condenser. Modern commercial split systems normally provide both cooling and heating.

Ceiling cassette or fan-coil unit?

People often use the term fan-coil unit for any indoor unit that contains a fan and heat exchanger. In light-commercial split air conditioning, the usual product is a refrigerant ceiling cassette.
