Ducted air conditioning systems.

A discreet heating-and-cooling option that hides the indoor unit and ductwork above a ceiling or within a purpose-built enclosure, leaving only supply and return-air grilles visible.

The simple explanation

What is ducted air conditioning?

A ducted split system uses an outdoor heat-pump condenser and a concealed indoor unit. The indoor unit cools or heats air, then a fan pushes that conditioned air through insulated ducts to one or more grilles. A separate return-air path brings room air back to the unit so it can be filtered and conditioned again.

The indoor equipment is normally positioned within a ceiling void, loft, bulkhead, plant area or carefully designed cupboard. The finished room can look much cleaner than a wall-mounted installation because the visible parts are limited to grilles and controls.

One important design point

A single concealed unit can serve one large space or, where the airflow, return-air path and zoning controls are properly engineered, more than one room. Serving several closed rooms is not as simple as adding extra ducts; every room needs enough supply air, a return-air route and a way to prevent noise, pressure and temperature-control problems.

How the system works

Four parts have to work as one design.

Good ducted air conditioning depends on the equipment, ductwork, air distribution and building details being designed together.

01 · Outdoor unit

Moves heat

The inverter-driven outdoor unit transfers heat outside in cooling mode and brings useful heat inside in heating mode.

02 · Concealed indoor unit

Conditions the air

The indoor heat exchanger and fan cool or heat the returning room air.

03 · Duct system

Distributes airflow

Insulated ducts, plenums, dampers and grilles deliver the correct air volume to each intended area.

04 · Controls

Maintains comfort

A wired controller, app or engineered zoning arrangement controls temperature, fan operation and schedules.

Pros and cons of ducted air conditioning.

Ducted systems can produce an excellent finish, but they need more design work and building coordination than a straightforward wall-mounted split.

Limitations

What must be considered first

  • A suitable ceiling void, loft, bulkhead or enclosure is required
  • More ductwork, grilles, access panels and making-good usually increase installation cost
  • Poorly designed ducts can create noise, draughts, uneven temperatures or wasted fan energy
  • Filters, drain components and the concealed unit still need safe maintenance access
  • A shared unit can reduce redundancy if several rooms depend on the same indoor equipment
  • Retrofitting can be disruptive where ceilings are already finished

Best suited to properties where the hidden infrastructure can be planned properly.

High-specification homes

New builds, major refurbishments and premium interiors where discreet grilles are preferred to visible wall units.

Open-plan living spaces

Several outlets can spread air more evenly across a large kitchen, dining and living area.

Bedrooms and suites

A concealed unit can keep the visual finish quiet, provided airflow and sound are designed around sleeping areas.

Offices and meeting areas

Ducted supply can serve spaces where wall-mounted units would conflict with furniture, glazing or presentation screens.

Loft and roof-space projects

Suitable voids may provide a practical route for the indoor unit and ducts, subject to insulation and access.

Multi-zone projects

Possible on selected designs, but the room loads, minimum airflow, return paths and controls must all be checked.

Heat load and capacity

Room size, ceiling height, glazing, orientation, occupancy, equipment and insulation affect the required cooling and heating output.

Available void and access

The indoor unit, duct sizes, drain, filters and service panels must physically fit and remain accessible.

External static pressure

The selected fan must be capable of overcoming the resistance created by the ducts, bends, filters, grilles and dampers.

Supply and return air

Each served area needs a balanced route for conditioned air to enter and room air to return.

Condensate drainage

The route, fall, pump requirement and safe discharge point are confirmed before the final specification.

Sound and vibration

Fan noise, duct breakout, grille velocity, plant position and vibration isolation are considered.

Electrical supply

The circuit, protection, isolators, cable route and available electrical capacity are checked against manufacturer data.

Ceiling and fire coordination

Ceiling construction, access hatches, fire compartmentation and any landlord or building-management requirements may need coordination with other trades.

Ducted air-conditioning questions.

Can ducted air conditioning serve several rooms?

It can on a properly designed project, but each room needs the correct airflow, return-air path and control strategy. A simple branch duct to several closed rooms is not automatically a good multi-zone design.

Does a ducted system need a false ceiling?

It needs a suitable concealed space such as a ceiling void, loft, bulkhead, plant area or purpose-built enclosure, together with service access for filters, drains and the indoor unit.

Is ducted air conditioning quieter than a wall unit?

It can provide very quiet room conditions because the fan unit is concealed, but duct velocity, grille selection, fan pressure, vibration isolation and the location of the indoor unit all affect sound.

Can a ducted system heat as well as cool?

Yes. Most modern ducted split systems are reversible air-to-air heat pumps and provide both cooling and heating within the operating range of the selected equipment.

Is ducted air conditioning more expensive?

It is usually more involved than a basic wall-mounted split because it needs ductwork, grilles, return air, access panels and often ceiling or joinery work. The exact difference depends on the property and finish.
