Floor area, ceiling height, insulation, roof exposure, glazing, orientation, occupants and electrical equipment all contribute to the required capacity.
02Loft and top-floor bedrooms
Bedrooms directly beneath a roof can retain heat into the evening. Roof construction, insulation and restricted night-time cooling can materially increase demand.
03Window direction and shading
Large south- or west-facing windows can add substantial afternoon and evening solar gain. External shading, blinds and curtains can reduce the load.
04Minimum sound level
Published low-fan sound data helps compare models, but room acoustics, mounting quality and fan speed also affect what the occupant hears.
05Airflow direction
The indoor unit should distribute air through the room without directing a persistent cold draught across the bed, pillows or a frequently occupied desk.
06Indoor-unit position
Available wall space, door swings, wardrobes, curtains and the route to the outside all influence where the unit can be installed neatly and serviced safely.
07Outdoor-unit position
The condenser needs clear airflow and service access. Its sound and vibration should be considered in relation to bedroom windows, neighbours and lightweight roofs.
08Condensate drainage
Cooling removes moisture from the room air. A reliable gravity drain is preferred; where that is impossible, a suitable condensate pump may be needed.
09Electrical supply
The selected system may require a dedicated circuit, local isolator and protective device. The route from the consumer unit is included in the technical assessment.
10Controls and display lights
Timers, sleep modes, app control, weekly schedules and the ability to dim or switch off indicator lights can all improve night-time usability.
11Heating requirement
Most modern split systems can also heat the bedroom. Winter heat loss, desired warm-up time and the intended role alongside the main heating system affect selection.
12Future rooms
If more bedrooms may be added later, it is worth comparing separate single splits with a multi-split design before committing to outdoor-unit positions and routes.
