Heating with air conditioning: how efficient is it?

Modern split air conditioners are reversible air-to-air heat pumps. The same system that cools a room in summer can move heat indoors during cooler weather, often delivering several units of heat for each unit of electricity used.

Air-to-air heat pump technology

It moves heat rather than creating all of it directly.

In heating mode, the outdoor unit extracts low-grade heat from the outside air and the refrigerant circuit raises its temperature before the indoor unit releases it into the room. Heat is still available in outside air at low temperatures, although capacity and efficiency change as conditions become colder.

This is fundamentally different from a basic electric resistance heater. A resistance heater converts approximately one unit of electricity into one unit of heat at the point of use. A well-designed heat pump can deliver multiple units of heat for one unit of electricity because most of the heat is transferred rather than generated.

What does a SCOP of 4 or 5 actually mean?

SCOP compares useful seasonal heat output with the electricity used over a standard heating profile.

SCOP 4.0

Under the standard seasonal calculation, one unit of electricity corresponds to four units of useful heat output.

SCOP 5.0

Under the same methodology, one unit of electricity corresponds to five units of useful heat output.

Actual performance changes with outdoor temperature, setpoint, airflow, room heat loss, defrost operation and how often the unit starts and stops.

What reduces real-world heating efficiency?

How to use it efficiently

  • Choose a sensible, steady setpoint
  • Heat the rooms you are actually using
  • Close doors between conditioned and unconditioned spaces
  • Keep filters clean
  • Use timers and occupancy schedules
  • Do not repeatedly switch between extreme settings
  • Keep the outdoor unit unobstructed
  • Arrange servicing at the correct interval
  • Compare model-specific SCOP and operating ranges
  • Improve insulation and reduce unnecessary heat loss

Heating one room versus five rooms.

The number of indoor units does not tell the whole story. What matters is how many rooms call for heat at the same time and the total heat loss they create.

One active room

A correctly sized single split can provide very efficient targeted heating with complete independence.

Two or three rooms

A multi split may reduce outdoor units, but the condenser must be selected for realistic simultaneous demand.

Four or five rooms

Capacity diversity, pipe lengths, outdoor-unit combinations and how the property is occupied become especially important.

Whole-home expectations

Air-to-air systems heat the rooms containing indoor units. They do not normally provide domestic hot water and may not distribute heat into closed hallways or bathrooms.

How does it compare with other heating?

Portable electric heaters: simple to buy, but typically one unit of electricity gives approximately one unit of heat. A split heat pump can provide multiple units of heat per unit of electricity under suitable conditions.

Gas central heating: gas usually has a lower unit price than electricity, but a boiler heats water and often serves a larger area. A room-by-room heat-pump comparison must consider boiler efficiency, zoning, usage pattern and both tariffs.

Air-to-water heat pumps: these serve wet central-heating and hot-water systems. Air conditioning is an air-to-air heat pump and is designed for direct room heating and cooling.
